Local 281 Members Restore a Part of Binghamton’s Past
Since June 2008, members of LU 281 have been working on the Historic Dwightsville Gateway Project. This area, located on Front Street and on Clinton Street, has seen better days over the years. The project will renovate older turn-of-the-century homes into apartments as well as a building that once housed a hotel and bank that will now become two retail spaces and apartment units. The general contractor handing the renovations, W.L Kline, specializes in historical preservation work.

Member Participation Equals Deposits in Manhours
Sixty-seven members of Local Union 7 contributed their time and energy for two chilly weeks in early December 2008 to campaign for a job with Hudson City Savings Bank. The Bank planned to add at least four new banks in 2009, and continue that expansion west towards New York City. Each bank constructed represented about 4000 manhours of work that LU 7 members would lose out on if they did not act quickly. Within two weeks of members taking charge of the banner, Hudson City called for a meeting and agreed to build all future banks using the Empire State Carpenters.

On The Fringe
By David B. Stewart, CEBS
This article is intended to focus on the fringe benefits provided to members of the Empire State Council of Carpenters. What are fringe benefits? Fringe benefits, also referred to as employee benefits, can be described as compensation paid to an employee in addition to an hourly wage. Your non-union counter-parts, are likely to view what you consider to be fringe benefits as perquisites (perks, perqs), when you consider that it is unlikely that they receive the fringe benefits you receive from their non-union employers.
