LOBBY DAY

Empire State Regional Council of Carpenters representatives meet with legislators regarding the issues and laws that affect our union on a regular basis throughout the year. In addition to that standard practice, this year each of our regions participated in a separate Lobby Day for their area in Albany and a joint Lobby Day with the New York City District Council of Carpenters in June. Our representatives met with and tried to influence our state legislators on issues important to our Council. The issues discussed included:
- The Employer Fair Play Act, which addresses payroll fraud, includes misclassifying an employee as an employer and issuing a 1099 tax form, not paying workers compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, state and federal taxes and social security.
- The definition of the Public Works bill, which would clearly define any jobs with government or taxpayer funds or assistance, is done at the prevailing wage rate.
- We also voiced our displeasure with any increased fees being levied on employer provided benefits funds.
Overall our representatives held over 150 meetings with legislators throughout the state. These meetings were very productive with legislators taking a vested interest in our issues and committing to work with us on addressing them.
